Whitney Smith

Associate Director and Data Services and Development Lead

With 25+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical research industry, Whitney Smith is an Associate Director providing leadership and oversight to the Data Management, Database Development, and Medical Coding teams. She leads a department of data management professionals and is ultimately responsible for ensuring high-quality clinical data management services such as:

  • Fully validated electronic data capture systems that match the trial needs;
  • Complete data review and cleaning; and
  • Medical coding that meets industry-standards for regulated research studies.

Ms. Smith is an integral member of the SOP review committee and internal Westat Quality Board. She is responsible for mentoring and guiding her staff with continuous growth and learning opportunities.

She has worked with clinical systems such as Oracle Clinical and Medidata Rave for the management of clinical trial data and has directed the implementation of Medidata Rave at many organizations across the country.

Ms. Smith has also served as the clinical data manager for several commercial and government clinical trials contracts with a wide range of therapeutic areas such as oncology and infectious disease, including COVID-19. She also contributes to marketing and business development initiatives by delivering presentations and materials to new contacts, networking with industry partners, and contributing to proposal development.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Smith managed data for clinical trials of combination therapy for patients with hepatitis C and HIV for Hoffmann-La Roche. She also maintained a global library and data standards for database builds at Novartis. She assisted in the development of drugs for obesity and type II diabetes, using animal models and experiments before moving to testing in human subjects where she was responsible for conducting assays on blood collected post-study drug administration.
